Bushfire threatening victorian town of balmoral under control for the first time since World War I and the danger from raging wildfires has been widely reported since the 1970s.

An Air Algerie plane was among those to fly into the fire when it touched down at Balmoral Airport on Saturday.

Mr Cuthbert said the aircraft was landing at Balmoral with its pilot taking over with the air crew assisting.

The National Fire Service said all communications were shut down and it was not known when the aircraft would go to the runway.

Fires had been reported at Balmoral's other two airfields in southern and western parts of Queensland, including St. Paul's, and the port city of Brisbane, while authorities in Sydney also shut the major ferry services to and from Perth.

A Balmoral resident said they had seen a "huge fireball" in the distance.

"That's the last thing we would ever have imagined when we woke up to hear that (bureaucracy) was down," the resident told ABC radio.

Mr Cuthbert told media yesterday night that the aircraft had landed.

Injuries sustained by the first responders after a massive collapse on an airplane at JFK airport Thursday morning are extensive and include multiple broken bones and broken ribs in addition to the massive trauma, the hospital said.

More than 150 passengers and crew were in the aircraft on one flight when it rolled over Thursday morning during a stopover from Chicago, said Peter C. Garber, spokesman for the New York Port Authority.

"It was a dramatic event and some people lost the ability to breathe," Garber said. "It's something I've never seen before."

The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash, which happened at about 8:40 a.m., the airport said. The cause of the disaster remains under investigation.

The plane crashed in an area that included the north wing of an airplane hangar at Kennedy, Garber said.

In total, six people were taken to area hospitals with injuries that range in severity, he said. No word on their condition, but Garber said all were released.

Among the injured were the first responders who rushed to help the passengers after the plane landed.

Two of those arriving at the hospital were hurt and are in critical condition.

The injured were being rushed to University of Phoenix hospital, said David H. Smith, chairman and CEO of the hospital, which runs the airport. Both the hospital and the New York Port Authority would not release any more details.

"At this time we cannot confirm that any patients transported by the New York Port Authority or the New York City Medical Center are in direct or indirect surgery," Smith said.

At least five people were pronounced dead, including those on board, with 11 injured and a number of passengers confirmed as being unharmed, according to officials at the scene.

According to the National Transportation Safety Board, the plane suffered a power failure during takeoff from Chicago in the last minute of a six-hour overnight flight and was trying to make a quick turn around New York's runway when the incident occurred.

The plane had gone off its assigned path and was heading to Atlanta when it went into a vertical dive, officials said.
